Improved Toughness of Polylactide by Binary Blends with Polycarbonate with Glycidyl and Maleic Anhydride?Based Compatibilizers

This work reports on the development of polylactide (PLA) and polycarbonate (PC) blends with different compatibilizers enhanced toughness. Since both polymers are immiscible, two types tested: petrochemical-based copolymers Xibond 160 920 maleic anhydride epoxy groups, respectively, natural-based same functionalities, namely maleinized linseed oil (MLO) and, epoxidized (ELO). Mechanical, thermal, morphological characterization shows better properties for PLA/PC (80/20 wt%) chemically modified natural oils (ELO MLO). The addition 5 phr (parts per hundred resin) MLO gives maximum values impact strength elongation at break. Moreover, glass transition temperature (Tg) slightly decreases compatibilizers, thus showing some plasticization effect. Petroleum-derived give interesting results regarding tensile stiffness without plasticization. show higher thermal stability than neat PLA, regardless compatibilizer used, since PC is much more thermally stable PLA. obtained indicate that petroleum-based natural-derived positively contribute to enhance binary blends.
